Bad Math

exploring the local government equation

Welcome

Our Premise

Bad Math is predicated on a simple idea: the way the US has built its cities since World War II doesn't add up. We've expanded sprawling infrastructure without building the density to support it, and the bill is now coming due.

This podcast aims to explore that uneven equation, through the lens of Kansas City. We'll interview local leaders, activists, and policymakers, in order to understand how those with influence approach these problems. KC is a place with a history of rich urbanism, once nicknamed "Paris on the Plains," a metropolis that crosses two states and three counties. It is also a city that suffered some of the worst consequences of the suburban experiment: highways plowed through downtown, the uprooting of streetcar lines, and flight to the outermost suburbs. We want to understand the impact of that history, and of modern decision making on these issues.

Join us as we explore the Bad Math that our city, and much of the country, is based on.
